Respected and Safe
Respected and Safe is Cybersafe Scotland's main programme, created to help children, families and school staff to improve their understanding of online abuse, risk and responsibility.
Respected and Safe was developed with schools and delivers support through:
-
Targeted Support Groups
-
Universal Lesson Programme (P6 and P7 learners)
-
Support for staff, parents and caregivers
The model aims to maximise early intervention to reduce, and protect children from, tech-facilitated abuse, harassment and exploitation, while also increasing digital literacy and critical thinking to reduce wider online harms – including well-being impacts, bullying and all forms of gender-based violence.
Children can find it very difficult to speak about some of things that have happened to them online. There are many reasons for this which include:
-
Behaviours have been normalised to the extent that they are no longer recognised as abusive,
-
They feel shame or embarassment,
-
They have no one who is involved in their online life at home,
-
They are worried about adult reactions, particularly devices being removed.
Children's Voices at the Heart of an Effective Response
Listening to children and understanding their experiences online, before developing the tools to help them, is at the heart of the Respected and Safe model.
Understanding the nature and scale of online abuse, harassment and exploitation that children are experiencing is crucial to effective prevention of harm and early intervention when harm happens. Children’s voices are the key to both better understanding the problem and advocating for change.
Rather than addressing the issue purely by providing educational support, the Respected and Safe programme has created safe spaces and developed a methodology to allow children’s voices to be heard, which is sensitive to their rights and privacy.
